Abstract Information literacy is one of the most important terms which covers all the techniques related to the information. The ability to search, evaluate and use information effectively is more commonly known as Information Literacy. It is a new type of skill that arises as a demand of the information era. In the age of information explosion, it has created a new demand for proficiencies and capabilities to deal with information. The aim of this study is to assess the information literacy competency of ISLM graduate students and also focus on the strengths and weaknesses of students. In general it was found that students had limited skills in the area of information literacy as most of the IL courses were not available in their syllabus. Based on these findings, a series of recommendations were proposed to help develop information literacy competency. This study urges that incorporation of information literacy programme in the course curriculum, more and more writings, discussion and other relevant issues will make ISLM graduate students more information literate.
