Abstract Dr SR Ranganathan is rightly hailed as the father of Indian Library Science and one of the most important information scientists to ever grace the field. He was also a tireless evangelist for education and accessibility to books and information. This biographical note explores aspects of his personal background and character, both of which had obvious influence over his professional life and his attitude towards his colleagues and students. It will also place his success in the context of some of the personal challenges he faced and overcame, amplifying his already monumental achievements.
