Evaluation of library websites of private universities in Delhi NCR-A preliminary study

This study is an attempt to analyse the websites of 17 Private universities in Delhi NCR at macro level using a 12 checkpoint indicator. The paper goes on to analyse the usability checkpoints, to identify the similarities, differences, and gaps in displaying various information content on the web pages; and to highlight the role of librarians in information organization on the websites of university libraries. The check points wise analysis shows that most frequently sought after features viz. FAQ, Formatting, Announcements, Staff details with contact numbers whereas updation details have almost been neglected. One may argue that some of the information is available only for bonafide members over intranet but even then provision of at least some indicative information can promote the visibility of the websites. There are researchers outside the university looking for some basic data about the library resources, and services. For them the availability and access to required information on library website is the most convenient and reliable source. Only three universities have achieved average score for the presence of different checkpoints. From these observations the paper moves on to analyse and suggest ways to increase the visibility of the institutions and the role libraries play in aiding the increase of visibility. The role of librarian is of utmost importance as they only can take initiative by convincing the administration about a full fledged exclusive dynamic website where its services and resources are to be brought to the notice of all types of users besides their effective and efficient use. It should not be forgotten that this is the first and only source of information for most of the users before they physically visit the libraries. With a view to increasing visibility of the institution, librarians have to play the crucial role of creation and developing library websites in consultation and cooperation with all stake holders like administrators, IT professionals, and the users. To go a step further, librarians should adopt various strategies like designing an online feedback mechanism on a regular basis so that maximum utilization of electronic information services is achieved in an efficient and effective manner.
