Abstract Aim Internal evaluation of the Department of Library and Information Studies at Kharazmi University.

Method A mixed-methods study was conducted using semi-structured interviews, questionnaire survey and check lists. The research population included faculty members, current students (2011–2012 academic year), graduated students and managers.

Findings There has been an increase in the number of faculty members, programmes, and research output as well as in the level of administrative independence of the department. Input elements such as managers, students, faculty members and also output elements such as graduated students, educational procedures, and faculty members are satisfactory. The strength of the department lies in the capabilities of faculty members, willingness for collaboration and integration. The existing threats include lack of teaching facilities and educational resources and the fact that library and information science curriculum is not in accordance with the needs of the society and the labor market
