Library and Information Support Services for Socio-Economic Development of Bangladesh

Abstract In Bangladesh, there are more than 665 special libraries and information centres working in the field of health, agriculture, rural development, science and technology, education and research, development studies, and other areas of socio-economic development. The study aims at identifying the areas where information can contribute to the socio-economic development process. Explores the availability of socio-economic information system in Bangladesh. Determines the impact of library and information services on socio-economic development on the basis of some selected libraries and information centers of the country. The study reveals that these libraries support socio-economic development process by acquiring information resources, providing library and information services, adapting different programmes, and promoting information activities on socio-economic issues. Finally, an attempt has been made to suggest some effective measures and future directions for further improvement of the condition.
