Abstract The article describes about MLIS programme and its components being offered through distance mode by Indira Gandhi National Open University, New Delhi (India) with a special emphasis on professional competency building by the learners who have successfully completed this programme. The objectives of joining this programme and the competency achieved through course material, seminar, computer practical, teleconferencing, library facilities, audio/video materials, counselling, assignments have been discussed in detail based on a feedback study/survey undertaken by the author. The article further explains the benefits gained, problems confronted and advances suggestions for improvements in future by the learners.
